Royal Queensland Wine Show

For 141 years, thousands of Australian winemakers have entered the nationally esteemed Royal Queensland Wine Show (RQWS) — the first capital city wine show held in Australia each year and the first to judge the new season's vintage. Built upon longstanding traditions celebrating excellence in wine, this prestigious show continues to garner success by paying close attention to consumer interest and current industry trends.

With the $12,000 RNA fellowship to be awarded again in 2019, the RQWS continues to be an exciting opportunity for winemakers to further their knowledge of the national and international wine industry, with fellowship funds to be used for travel, training and education towards developing their winemaking skills.

New Chief Judge - Jim Chatto

The RQWS welcomes the new Chief Judge Jim Chatto, who will lead a team of expert wine judges and industry peers from across the nation.

Mr Chatto owns Isle Vineyard in Tasmania’s Huon Valley and has more than 25 years winemaking experience. He also has more than 20 years experience as a wine judge, holding chair of judges’ roles at other capital city and regional wine shows.

Angelo Puglisi Grand Champion Wine of Show

The RQWS is also celebrating one of the industry’s finest, naming its prestigious Grand Champion Wine of Show trophy after Angelo Puglisi - known as ‘the father of the Queensland wine industry.’

RQWS Committee Chair Angus Adnam said naming the trophy after Angelo was befitting due to the significant contributions he has made to the Queensland wine industry.

“Mr Puglisi was instrumental in establishing a modern wine industry in Queensland beginning in the 1960s, when he planted recognised wine grape varieties in the Granite Belt. Previously, wine in Queensland had largely been made from table grapes,” he said.

Post judging, the wine will be showcased to the public at Grape Grazing by Night on Friday 12 July 2019. Now in its fourth year, this exclusive event gives winemakers public recognition for their achievements and allows attendees the chance to sample the award-winning wines.

Angelo Puglisi founded Ballandean Estate Winery in Queensland's Granite Belt region. To read more about Angelo's instrumental role in the Queensland wine industry, click here.
